Leaving it Too Late

I have stumbled to the end of this road I’ve been traveling on.
Such a short way I was going; such a long time I’ve been gone.
I found nothing that I wanted; take pity on my raggedy soul.
I got only what I asked for and it’s left me so hollow and cold.

It’s a long road leading down
Turn my feet around Lord; I’ll just turn my feet around.

‘Cause that moon will soon be rising
There’s a darkness on its way.
If I don’t turn back before it falls,
I’ll be leaving it too late.

Oh, they still don’t know how he lost his soul; his faith broke down one day.
He was an ordinary gypsy boy ‘til his feet just turned to clay.
He’d gone looking for some sunshine; they found him way down south
Howling like a werewolf, moonshine in his mouth.

It’s a rough go on shaky ground
Turned me upside-down Lord, it nearly turned me upside-down.

And that moon will soon be rising
There’s a darkness on its way.
If I don’t turn back before it falls,
I’ll be leaving it too late.

There’s nothing up ahead for me; I should be walking back
‘ Cause once that night wind blows in, I’ll be frozen in my tracks.
I have stumbled to the end of this road I’ve been traveling on.
Such a short way I was going; such a long time I’ve been gone.

It takes a hard blow to keep me down
‘ Cause I can hit the ground Lord; I know how to hit the ground.

And that moon will soon be rising
There’s a darkness on its way.
If I don’t turn back before it falls, I’ll be leaving it too late.
I’ve got one eye on the horizon
I’ve got one eye on my grave
And my thoughts are on that gypsy boy
Whose feet just turned to clay.
